Shelby County, KY (May 19, 2026) – A construction-related collapse claimed the life of one worker on Monday afternoon, May 18, on Dover Rd near the Oldham County line in Shelby County. The fatal incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. while a barn for horse use was being built on private property.
According to the Shelby County Coroner’s Office, 35-year-old Molina Mazarieggos was working from an aerial lift as crews installed large roof trusses on the structure. Witnesses said strong wind struck the truss system, causing several sections to fall and knocking Mazarieggos from the lift. He died at the property.
Several people received treatment at the property following the collapse, and two workers were taken to a nearby hospital for further care. Their medical status was not released. Property owner Carrie Turk said the loss left her devastated and described the moments when multiple workers fell from the trusses.
More details about the collapse had not been made public as of Tuesday. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the structure failure. We extend heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the man who lost his life.
What Factors Can Lead to a Construction Structure Collapse?
Construction structure collapses can happen for several reasons, especially during framing or roofing work involving large support systems. Strong wind conditions may place sudden pressure on unfinished sections before they are fully secured. Heavy trusses and partially installed roofing materials can also shift unexpectedly if support points fail or equipment moves out of position.
Work performed from aerial lifts or elevated platforms may increase the risk of serious harm when materials fall from above. Safety reviews after these types of construction failures often examine weather conditions, equipment placement, structural stability, and whether temporary supports were properly installed. Early information released after a collapse is sometimes limited because investigators must first document the worksite and inspect the damaged structure carefully before reaching conclusions.
