What Makes Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Interstates So Dangerous?
Multi-vehicle crashes on interstates can escalate quickly due to high speeds and heavy traffic, especially during overnight or early-morning hours when visibility may be reduced. When one crash occurs, following drivers often have limited time to react, leading to chain-reaction collisions involving multiple vehicles.
Factors such as sudden braking, lane changes, or debris on the roadway can contribute to these incidents. Large highways like I-20 are particularly vulnerable because of the constant flow of traffic and the presence of commercial vehicles, which require longer stopping distances.
These crashes often result in more severe outcomes due to the number of vehicles involved and the force of multiple impacts. Staying alert, maintaining safe following distances, and adjusting speed based on road conditions are critical steps drivers can take to reduce the risk of a multi-vehicle accident.
