Cortlandt Manor, NY (May 27, 2026) – A house fire broke out on Sherwood Road in Cortlandt Manor, leading to the death of a 17-year-old girl and leaving a 15-year-old boy critically injured.
The fire started early Wednesday, around 2:30 a.m., in a two-story home in Westchester County. Fire crews arrived to heavy flames spreading through the structure, with reports that multiple family members were inside at the time. Officials said an older sibling was able to get the mother out of the home, while the two teenagers remained upstairs.
Firefighters entered the residence and used ladders to reach second-floor bedrooms, where both teens were located. The girl, identified as 17-year-old Alina Toone, was pronounced deceased. A 15-year-old boy was pulled from the home in critical condition and taken to a hospital. The mother was also hospitalized, though her condition was not immediately released.
Investigators said the fire may have started due to an overloaded extension cord or power strip, though the exact cause remains under review.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the teenager who lost her life.
What Safety Risks Are Linked to Extension Cords in Residential Fires
Extension cords and power strips are commonly used in homes, but overloading them can create dangerous heat buildup. When too many devices draw power from a single source, wiring may overheat and increase the risk of electrical failure. This can be especially hazardous in older homes or during overnight hours when fires may go unnoticed for longer periods.
Fire experts suggest avoiding daisy-chaining multiple power strips together and ensuring cords are not damaged or covered by furniture or carpets. Smoke alarms and proper electrical inspections can also help reduce risks and provide early warning in case of a fire.
Residential fire incidents can develop rapidly, making escape time limited, particularly in multi-story homes where upper floors may be harder to reach quickly.
