Tempe, AZ (January 22, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized early on Thursday morning following a serious crash caused by a red-light runner believed to be impaired, according to Tempe Police.
The collision occurred just after midnight on Mill Ave near the U.S. 60 overpass. Investigators say one vehicle was lawfully turning left on a green arrow when another vehicle, reportedly traveling at high speed, ran a red light and crashed into it.
Both drivers, the sole occupants of their vehicles, were seriously injured and transported to a local hospital. Officials described their conditions as serious but stable.
Tempe Police confirmed that the driver who ran the red light was impaired at the time of the crash. Charges are likely pending as the investigation continues.
Mill Ave was shut down in both directions for several hours as police conducted a crash reconstruction. The roadway reopened around 9:15 a.m. The nearby U.S. 60 on- and off-ramps remained open throughout the investigation, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
We send our thoughts to both individuals as they recover from this dangerous incident.
