Why Can Emergency Vehicles Still Be Involved in Roadway Wrecks?
Emergency vehicles usually travel under urgent circumstances, using lights and sirens to reach calls as quickly as possible. Even with specialized driver training, crews can face additional risks posed by sharp curves, changing road surfaces, heavy vehicles, and the need to maintain control at higher speeds.
Large vehicles such as fire trucks have a higher center of gravity than many passenger vehicles, making them more prone to rollover if they leave the roadway or make sudden steering corrections. Investigators typically examine roadway design, weather, vehicle condition, speed, and driver actions to determine how a rollover occurred. Mechanical inspections and physical evidence from the roadway may also help provide a clearer picture of the sequence of events.
