Chester, CA (June 12, 2026) – A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of State Route 36 and State Route 89 in Chester left multiple people hurt on Thursday afternoon, June 11. A white truck and a green van were involved, and both vehicles came to rest, blocking the roadway after the collision.
Two people were airlifted, one to SEMSA and one to Enloe Medical Center, and a third person had been taken to a nearby airport by emergency units ahead of the air transports. Both vehicles had major front-end damage, and the van also had a partially detached front tire and was carrying a motorcycle on the back. A tow was requested for both. The truck had four intact tires.
The westbound lane was temporarily blocked during the response and was later reopened in both directions. Significant debris was also reported at the intersection. The people involved in the wreck had not been publicly identified as of this report. The cause of the collision is still being examined, and further details are expected as the inquiry moves forward.
We hope for a full recovery for all those hurt.
What Happens When Crash Victims Are Airlifted in Rural Northern California?
When a serious crash happens in a rural part of Northern California, medical helicopters usually become the fastest way to get badly hurt people to a trauma center. Roads in mountainous regions like Plumas County can be far from major hospitals, making air transport a common choice when injuries are severe. The distance to advanced care can make a real difference in outcomes for those who are critically hurt.
Medical helicopters in California are typically dispatched through regional coordination centers, which assess injury severity and available aircraft before assigning a flight. In some cases, multiple helicopters are sent when more than one person needs immediate care. Ground units may stabilize patients at the scene while the aircraft are in transit.
Once airlifted, patients are generally taken to trauma centers equipped to handle serious injuries. The receiving hospital is usually selected based on the type of care needed and which facility is closest and available at the time.
