How Wrong-Way Driving Increases Crash Risks
Wrong-way driving creates a significant hazard because motorists traveling in the correct direction may have little time to react. These situations can develop suddenly, especially on one-way streets, highway ramps, or roads with limited visibility.
Several factors may contribute to wrong-way driving, including driver impairment, confusion about traffic patterns, poor visibility, or unfamiliarity with a roadway. Because vehicles are moving toward each other rather than in the same direction, these crashes often involve higher closing speeds.
Road signs, pavement markings, and traffic control devices are designed to help drivers identify the proper direction of travel. When a vehicle enters a roadway incorrectly, the likelihood of a serious collision increases, particularly in areas with moderate or heavy traffic.
