Union County, SC (March 11, 2026) – Three people were injured on Tuesday evening, March 10, after a small plane crashed in a field near Old Buncombe Rd in Union County.
Officials said the single-prop aircraft was en route from Greenwood to Rock Hill when it experienced a mechanical issue in flight. The pilot attempted to divert the aircraft toward Union County Airport but was unable to reach the runway.
Around 7:15 p.m., the plane was forced to land in a field near Old Buncombe Rd. Emergency units arrived shortly after the crash and found three people who had been on board the aircraft.
All three occupants were hurt but survived the incident. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with those injured as they continue to recover.
Why Mechanical Issues Can Lead to Emergency Plane Landings
Mechanical problems are one of the most common reasons pilots must make emergency landings. Even small aircraft rely on several interconnected systems, including engines, fuel delivery, and flight controls. If one of these systems fails, the pilot may need to land immediately.
Pilots are trained to look for the safest available area when a runway cannot be reached. Open fields, flat farmland, and wide clearings are often used in these situations because they provide more space for landing and reduce the risk of hitting buildings or trees.
During an emergency landing, the goal is to slow the aircraft and bring it down in a controlled way. When this process works as intended, passengers may still suffer minor injuries, but the outcome can be far less severe than a high-speed impact.
