What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety on Highways?
Pedestrian crashes on highways often involve higher risks due to high speeds and limited visibility. Unlike city streets, highways are not designed for foot traffic, making crossings especially dangerous at night or in low-light conditions.
Lighting conditions, driver awareness, and road design can all influence the occurrence of these incidents. Areas without designated crossings or pedestrian signals may increase the chances of a crash. Drivers may also have less time to react when someone enters the roadway unexpectedly.
Clothing visibility and traffic flow can also affect outcomes. Dark clothing can make it harder for drivers to see someone at night, while heavy traffic reduces the ability to slow down quickly. These combined factors often contribute to the severity of pedestrian-related crashes.
