What Is Reviewed After a Wrong-Lane Highway Fatality?
After a deadly wrong-lane highway case, investigators often begin by examining traffic patterns, roadway markings, and vehicle positions. These early findings may help explain how one vehicle entered opposing lanes of travel. Weather, lighting, and visibility are also frequently reviewed, especially during late-night driving hours.
Vehicle damage and electronic data can provide additional details about speed, steering, or braking before contact occurred. Witness statements may also help establish the sequence of events leading up to the deaths. In some situations, toxicology testing and driver history reviews become part of the process as more information is gathered.
Highway design, shoulder width, and warning signs are sometimes evaluated as well. Final findings may take time, particularly when multiple deaths are involved, and forensic reviews are still pending.
