West Pennsboro Township, PA (April 18, 2026) – Four people were hospitalized on Friday morning, April 17, following a serious crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Cumberland County.
State police said the crash happened around 8:10 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 76 near mile marker 219 when a car struck a parked tractor-trailer. The impact left multiple occupants trapped inside the vehicle.
Emergency units responded and worked to free the individuals from the wreckage. Officials confirmed that all four people sustained serious injuries. Two of the victims were later airlifted to a hospital by medical helicopter, while the others were transported by ground ambulance.
All eastbound lanes between the Breezewood and Carlisle exits were shut down for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Westbound lanes were also briefly closed to allow the helicopter to land safely.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured as they recover.
Why Collisions With Parked Tractor-Trailers Can Be So Severe
Crashes involving parked tractor-trailers on highways often result in serious injuries due to the size and weight difference between vehicles. When a smaller passenger vehicle strikes a stationary truck, the force of impact can be extreme.
These incidents may occur in areas where vehicles are stopped due to breakdowns, traffic congestion, or emergencies. Limited visibility, high speeds, and driver distraction can also increase the risk of such collisions.
When occupants are trapped, emergency responders often require specialized equipment to safely remove them. Air medical transport is sometimes used when injuries are severe and rapid access to trauma care is needed.
