Winter Haven, FL (March 1, 2026) – One person was killed, and another remains in critical condition following a two-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon in Winter Haven.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 3:54 p.m. at the intersection of Winter Lake Road and Camellia Drive.
Deputies reported that a 2017 Subaru was stopped and waiting to turn left across the westbound lanes of Winter Lake Road when the crash occurred. Authorities said the driver of a Mercedes attempted to avoid the collision by braking heavily, but the two vehicles ultimately collided.
The impact pushed the Subaru northeast, causing it to spin before striking a large stone wall. The Mercedes also spun and came to rest in the outside westbound lane of Winter Lake Road.
A deputy who witnessed the crash, along with personnel from Polk County Fire Rescue, immediately began lifesaving measures at the scene.
The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.
The crash remains under active investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and hope for the recovery of the injured driver.
The Severe Outcomes Intersection Crashes Lead To
Collisions involving vehicles attempting to turn left across active lanes of traffic often result in high-impact crashes. Drivers crossing opposing lanes must accurately judge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles, and even slight miscalculations can produce serious consequences.
When a vehicle traveling straight strikes a turning vehicle, the force of impact can cause secondary collisions with roadside objects, as occurred when the Subaru spun and struck a stone wall. Heavy braking attempts may reduce speed but do not always prevent impact, particularly at busy intersections.
Investigators typically review vehicle positioning, braking evidence, sightlines, and traffic conditions when reconstructing intersection crashes. Authorities are expected to release additional findings as the investigation continues.
