Union, NJ (July 5, 2026) – A woman was killed on Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Route 22 East in Union, authorities said.

According to Union Business Administrator Don Travisano, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, July 3, near the Chick-fil-A along Route 22 East.

Investigators said the woman was attempting to cross the four eastbound lanes of Route 22 when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead from her injuries.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, but they believe she was a resident of Newark, and the Newark Police Department is assisting with the investigation.

The collision prompted the closure of the eastbound lanes of Route 22 for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The roadway reopened at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Officials have not released additional information regarding the driver or the circumstances leading up to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

How Are Fatal Pedestrian Crashes Investigated?

Fatal pedestrian collisions require investigators to conduct a thorough examination of the crash scene to determine how the incident occurred. Officers document vehicle damage, roadway evidence, debris, lighting conditions, and the location of the pedestrian at the time of impact.

Investigators may also review witness statements, surveillance footage, traffic patterns, and electronic vehicle data when available. Factors such as roadway design, visibility, and pedestrian crossing locations are carefully evaluated to reconstruct the sequence of events.

By combining physical evidence with witness accounts and forensic analysis, investigators work to establish an accurate timeline of the collision. This process helps provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
