Officials with the Washington State Patrol said the crash occurred at approximately 9:46 p.m. along State Route 24 near milepost 21, about 15 miles east of Moxee, Washington. Investigators reported that two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided head-on along the highway. According to preliminary findings, one vehicle was traveling eastbound when the driver attempted to pass traffic by moving into the westbound lane. While in the opposing lane, the vehicle collided with a westbound vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 39-year-old man from Bellingham, Washington, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 38-year-old female passenger from Bellingham, Washington, also died at the scene. Two children who were riding in the same vehicle survived the crash but sustained injuries. Officials said a 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were transported to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The second vehicle was driven by a 35-year-old woman from Kelso, Washington, who was injured and taken to the hospital. An 11-year-old passenger in that vehicle died at the scene, while a 13-year-old girl riding in the same vehicle was injured and transported for medical care. Investigators reported that the crash was caused by unsafe passing after the eastbound driver entered the opposing lane. Authorities also noted that several occupants were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene. Troopers said the investigation remains ongoing, and officials are still working to determine whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the collision. The incident remains under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic crash.
Head-on Crashes Can Lead to Severe or Fatal Outcomes
Head-on collisions are among the most serious types of roadway accidents due to the combined force of vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
Highways such as State Route 24 often carry steady traffic through rural areas of Yakima County, Washington. When drivers attempt to pass slower-moving vehicles, entering an opposing traffic lane can create dangerous conditions if oncoming vehicles are approaching.
Investigators reviewing these incidents typically examine driver decisions, traffic flow, and roadway conditions to determine how the crash occurred and whether safety measures could help prevent similar tragedies.
