What Factors Often Contribute to Bicycle Crashes at Night?
Bicycle crashes that occur at night can be linked to reduced visibility for both riders and drivers. Low lighting makes it harder to spot cyclists, especially on roads without streetlights or reflective markings.
Riders may also face challenges if their bicycles lack lights or reflective gear. This can limit how quickly a driver notices them from behind, particularly on higher-speed roads.
Driver awareness is another factor. At night, reaction times can be affected by fatigue or limited sight distance. Road design, such as narrow shoulders or a lack of bike lanes, can also increase risk for cyclists sharing the roadway with vehicles.
