The report said the wreck happened around 5:13 p.m. as traffic headed toward town between the Waipahu on-ramp and the Waimalu off-ramp. The eastbound lanes were fully closed at about 5:27 p.m. following the roadway emergency.
Emergency units treated six people. A 7-year-old girl, a 34-year-old woman, and a 45-year-old woman were brought to a hospital in serious condition.
A baby girl, a 10-year-old girl, and a 33-year-old man were treated for minor injuries. Two teenage boys were evaluated at the site but did not need hospital care. Further details about the crash were not immediately available.
The review of the H-1 Freeway closure remains active as more facts are gathered. We hope all those hurt are able to recover with steady care and support.
Why Freeway Closures Often Follow Multi-Car Highway Emergencies
Full freeway closures may happen when several vehicles are involved or when people need care across multiple lanes. Keeping traffic away from the damaged vehicles gives medical teams room to work and reduces the chance of another impact nearby.
Afternoon travel can add pressure because more drivers may be on the road. Sudden slowing, lane changes, and blocked exits can create long backups in a short time. Drivers approaching stopped traffic may have only a few seconds to react.
Children and adults can also experience very different injury patterns in the same roadway emergency. Seat belts, child restraints, vehicle position, and the force of contact can all affect how serious the harm becomes.
