Austin, TX (May 9, 2026) – One person died, and another was hospitalized following an early morning crash on Saturday, May 9, on Interstate 35 in Austin. The collision occurred in the 7200 block of northbound Interstate 35 near the U.S. 183 on-ramp.
Austin police said the crash was reported at about 4:06 a.m. when a vehicle with two passengers struck an object or roadway feature near the on-ramp. The impact reduced northbound traffic to a single lane and led to the closure of the U.S. 183 on-ramp.
Both occupants were transported to a nearby hospital; one of the passengers later died from their injuries, while the other was treated for injuries.
Traffic delays were reported in the area while emergency units worked at the scene and investigators documented the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
What Can Cause Early-Morning Highway Crashes to Become Severe?
Early-morning highway crashes can become severe due to reduced visibility, fatigue, and high travel speeds. During overnight hours, fewer vehicles are on the road, which can lead some drivers to maintain higher speeds with less reaction time for sudden hazards.
Roadway design near on-ramps and interchanges can also increase risk, especially where merging traffic and lane shifts occur over a short distance. Investigators often review lighting conditions, driver behavior, and roadway markings to determine how a crash developed. Vehicle damage patterns and roadway evidence help reconstruct the sequence of events in incidents that result in serious injuries or fatalities.
