Why Head-on Collisions on Rural Highways Can Be Severe
Head-on crashes often occur when a vehicle crosses the centerline into oncoming traffic. These accidents can happen on rural highways where lanes are separated only by painted markings rather than physical barriers.
When two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, their combined speed can lead to severe impact forces. Larger vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, may also increase the severity of damage in these crashes.
Rural highways sometimes have long stretches of open roadway with higher travel speeds. Fatigue, distraction, or sudden steering changes may cause a vehicle to drift into an opposing lane.
Centerline markings, rumble strips, and attentive driving can help reduce the risk of vehicles crossing into oncoming traffic on these types of roads.
