How Early Morning Crashes Can Affect Highway Safety
Crashes that occur in the early morning hours often happen when traffic is lighter, but visibility and driver alertness may still be limited, which means fatigue, sun glare, and slower reaction times can all contribute to roadway risks during this time of day. In Liberty Township, Ohio, and similar communities, crash data have shown that early-morning incidents, while less frequent than daytime crashes, can still result in serious outcomes due to reduced awareness and changing light conditions.
On highways, even a minor collision can lead to lane closures and traffic delays while debris is cleared and vehicles are removed, and as a result, these incidents may increase the risk of secondary crashes if approaching drivers are not paying close attention. This risk can grow when visibility is reduced or traffic begins to build during morning hours.
Because of these factors, maintaining safe speeds, staying alert, and allowing sufficient distance between vehicles are key steps that help reduce the likelihood of early-morning highway crashes.
