Why Are Pedestrian Crashes at Intersections Often Severe?
Pedestrian crashes at intersections can be especially dangerous due to the combination of vehicle traffic and pedestrian activity.
Intersections are points where vehicles may be turning, accelerating, or navigating traffic signals, increasing the risk of a collision with someone crossing the roadway. Even when pedestrians are using designated crossing areas, visibility and timing can play critical roles in safety.
Because pedestrians lack physical protection, these types of crashes often result in serious or fatal injuries, particularly on high-speed roadways.
