El Paso, TX (May 18, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck blocked traffic along Interstate 10 West near Yarbrough in east El Paso on Monday morning, May 18. Emergency units were called to the roadway around 8:39 a.m. after reports of the pileup.
At least three people were taken to local hospitals following the wreck. Traffic in the surrounding section of I-10 West remained shut down for several hours while crews worked to clear the roadway and assist those involved.
By 11:30 a.m., all lanes had reopened to drivers. Additional information about those involved had not been released as of Tuesday.
Investigators are still working to determine what led up to the chain-reaction crash.
We hope those hospitalized make a full and timely recovery.
Why Semi-Truck Crashes Lead to Major Traffic Delays
Crashes involving semi-trucks can create long traffic backups, especially on busy interstate highways. Large and heavy commercial vehicles take up more roadway space and require specialized towing equipment before lanes can safely reopen. When several vehicles are involved, cleanup efforts may also include removing debris, inspecting damaged guardrails, and checking for fluid spills.
Road congestion can become worse during morning travel hours, when highways already carry heavy traffic volumes. Even after lanes reopen, delays may continue as traffic patterns slowly return to normal. Medical evaluations are also common after these collisions because the size and weight of semi-trucks can increase the force experienced by occupants in smaller passenger vehicles. Early reports in these cases are limited while more information is gathered from witnesses and roadway evidence.
