Elliott, ND (April 11, 2026) – Multiple people were hurt after a side-by-side vehicle overturned on a rural road southwest of Elliott on Friday, April 10.
The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m., in the 12200 block of 71st Street Southeast, about 2.5 miles southwest of town. A 2026 Polaris Ranger was traveling westbound on a minimum maintenance road covered in snow and mud when the driver lost control, left the roadway, then overcorrected before the vehicle rolled over.
The driver, a 36-year-old man from Lisbon, suffered serious injuries. A 29-year-old woman from Lisbon and two juvenile passengers were also hurt. A 20-year-old woman from Valley City was seriously injured in the crash. All occupants were taken to a local hospital, and the driver was later flown to Fargo for further treatment.
Authorities reported that some occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence. The incident remains under review by authorities.
We are thinking of those injured as they continue to receive care.
What Can Increase the Risk of Rollover Crashes on Rural Roads
Rollover crashes are more likely to happen on uneven or unpaved roads, especially when surfaces are muddy or covered with snow. These conditions can reduce tire grip and make it harder for drivers to maintain control.
Vehicles like side-by-sides have a higher center of gravity compared to standard cars. This can make them more prone to tipping if a driver turns sharply or overcorrects after leaving the roadway.
Seat belt use can help reduce the chance of serious injury during a rollover. On rural routes with limited maintenance, slower speeds and careful steering can help lower the risk of losing control.
