Why Wrong-Way Highway Accidents Are Often Deadly
Wrong-way highway accidents are especially dangerous because they often lead to direct head-on contact at high speeds. Drivers in the correct lanes may have very little time to react, especially at night or in low-light conditions. On interstates, vehicles can close distance quickly, making avoidance difficult.
Several factors may be reviewed after this type of roadway emergency. These can include where the wrong-way vehicle entered the highway, lighting, signs, lane markings, driver behavior, and traffic speed. Investigators may also check whether alcohol, fatigue, confusion, or roadway design contributed. Damage patterns and final vehicle positions can help show how the vehicles came together. In fatal cases, medical findings and witness accounts may also help explain the severity of the outcome.
