Understanding Head-On Crashes on Two-Lane Highways
Head-on collisions often occur when a vehicle crosses the center line of a two-lane road. These crashes are particularly dangerous because vehicles are traveling in opposite directions at high speeds, which increases the impact force.
Road conditions, visibility, and driver behavior, including distractions or fatigue, can contribute to vehicles leaving their lane. Seat belts and properly maintained vehicles can reduce injuries, but head-on impacts frequently result in serious or fatal outcomes due to the combined speeds of the vehicles involved.
Roadway design features such as centerline markings, rumble strips, and widened lanes aim to reduce the risk of lane departures, but drivers must remain attentive to prevent collisions.
