Why Disabled Vehicles on Highways Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Disabled vehicles left in active travel lanes can create sudden hazards for approaching drivers. At highway speeds, drivers may have limited time to react, especially in low-light conditions or when visibility is reduced.
In many cases, crashes involving stopped vehicles happen because drivers do not expect an obstruction in their lane. Even with proper lighting or hazard signals, a stationary vehicle can still be difficult to spot in time. This risk increases on roads with higher speed limits, like highways.
Drivers are generally encouraged to move disabled vehicles off the roadway whenever possible. If that is not an option, using hazard lights and placing warning signals at a distance can help alert others. These steps may reduce the chance of a secondary collision.
