Hillsborough, NC (March 10, 2026) – Multiple vehicle crashes occurred less than a mile apart on Interstate 40 in Orange County Saturday afternoon, March 7, including one that produced smoke from a fire. The latest crash happened around 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes at Mile Marker 261 near Old NC-86, prompting a full closure of both lanes.
Traffic cameras showed several cars involved and smoke rising from the roadway. Eastbound traffic was slowed, with backups stretching roughly two miles toward the I-40/I-85 split.
Emergency units responded quickly, and no serious injuries were reported in either crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crashes, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
Understanding Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Fire Hazards on Highways
Highway collisions involving multiple vehicles can create complex situations, especially when smoke or fire is present. Fire risks often arise from fuel leaks or collisions that damage vehicle components. In these cases, traffic can back up quickly as lanes are closed for safety.
Smoke and flames also reduce visibility, increasing the risk of additional collisions. Emergency responders must secure the scene, separate vehicles, and address any fire before traffic resumes. Even when no serious injuries occur, drivers may still experience minor injuries or shock.
Roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and timing of the crash all influence how quickly traffic can return to normal and how responders handle potential hazards safely.
