Roadside Incidents Pose Risks for First Responders
Law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel frequently work near active traffic lanes, placing them at risk of being struck by passing vehicles. Traffic stops, crash investigations, and roadside assistance calls require officers to exit their vehicles while remaining close to moving traffic.
Investigators examining these incidents typically review roadway conditions, vehicle movements, visibility, and driver actions to determine how the collision occurred. Even when emergency vehicles are clearly marked, distracted driving and improper lane changes can create hazardous conditions.
Safety officials continue to encourage motorists to remain alert, reduce speed, and move over when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along roadways whenever it is safe to do so.
