Why Are Wheelchair Users at Greater Risk in Traffic Incidents?
Individuals using wheelchairs face increased risks in traffic environments due to their lower visibility and limited mobility compared to pedestrians on foot. Drivers may not always notice wheelchair users in time, especially at busy intersections or in areas with heavy traffic.
Crossing streets can be more challenging, particularly if curb ramps, signals, or designated crossings are not easily accessible or clearly marked. Even at low speeds, a collision involving a vehicle and a wheelchair user can result in serious injuries.
Drivers can help improve safety by staying alert, yielding appropriately, and being especially cautious in areas where pedestrians are present. Increased awareness and accessible infrastructure are key factors in reducing these types of incidents.
