Morehead, KY (March 22, 2026) – A fatal crash claimed the life of a 30-year-old man on Saturday night, March 21, after a vehicle pursuit in Rowan County. Around 8:45 p.m., a trooper spotted a gray 2017 Chevrolet Camaro speeding on I-64 near the 128-mile marker and attempted to pull the car over. The Camaro refused to stop, accelerating instead and prompting a short pursuit.
The car exited at mile marker 133 and turned onto KY 801, continuing to evade the trooper. The pursuit was temporarily ended when the trooper lost sight of the vehicle around 8:50 p.m. Later reports from locals indicated a car matching the description was heading south on KY 801. A trooper located the Camaro just after 9:00 p.m. and attempted another traffic stop, triggering a second pursuit.
At the intersection of KY 801 and KY 519 around 9:05 p.m., the driver lost control, veering off the roadway and striking a utility pole. The Camaro caught fire and became fully engulfed. Emergency units tried to rescue the driver but were unable to. The deceased was identified as Donovan Kyle Porter, 30, from Olive Hill, KY. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
What Happens During a Vehicle Pursuit and Crash Response
High-speed pursuits can quickly become dangerous for both drivers and responders. Vehicles that lose control may veer off roads, collide with objects, or catch fire, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. Emergency teams focus on rescuing occupants and securing the scene to prevent further harm. Traffic patterns, road conditions, and vehicle speed all play a role in how a crash unfolds. Investigators also often assess the surrounding environment, such as intersections, utility poles, and nearby hazards, to better understand why a collision occurred. Understanding these factors can help highlight the risks involved in high-speed pursuits.
