Richmond, VA (January 8, 2026) – Multiple individuals sustained injuries following a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 southbound in Richmond on Wednesday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police and VDOT officials.
The collision occurred around 1:15 p.m. on January 7 near mile marker 71.8, approximately three miles north of the Bells Rd exit. Investigators stated that a disabled vehicle had come to a stop in the left lane of the interstate, triggering a cascading series of impacts involving four additional vehicles and a semi-truck. All vehicles were left disabled as a result of the incident.
Paramedics and other emergency medical personnel evaluated and treated the injured at the scene before transporting several individuals to area hospitals for further care. According to authorities, none of the injuries reported were considered life-threatening.
As crews arrived to assess the damage, one of the involved vehicles was found trapped beneath the tractor-trailer, leading to the closure of the left lane for over two hours. Tow and recovery teams worked swiftly to extract the vehicle and clear the debris from the roadway.
By approximately 4 p.m., all lanes of I-95 southbound had reopened, though traffic delays had already extended for over four miles earlier in the afternoon. Drivers in the area were advised to seek alternative routes while responders worked at the scene.
Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the role of the disabled vehicle and whether any citations will be issued in connection with the incident. Our thoughts go out to the victims as we hope for their recovery.
