Federal Way, WA (August 11, 2026) – A 33-year-old Seattle woman was killed early Monday, August 10, after exiting a moving vehicle and being struck by another car on northbound Interstate 5 near South 272nd Street in Federal Way. The incident happened around 12:17 a.m.

Investigators said the woman was riding in a vehicle traveling in lane three when she exited while the vehicle was still moving. A second vehicle was traveling north in lane one when it struck the woman. Both vehicles then stopped on the right shoulder, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The reason the woman exited the moving vehicle has not been released.

It was also unknown whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident. The northbound roadway was blocked for about three hours and 45 minutes. The fatal collision remains under investigation. Our deepest condolences go out to the woman’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

What Factors Are Considered After a Pedestrian Crash on a Highway?

Highway pedestrian crashes can involve limited reaction time because vehicles are traveling at higher speeds than on many city streets. Investigators may review the location of each vehicle, lane positions, vehicle damage, and physical evidence to establish the sequence of events.

Visibility, lighting, traffic conditions, and available camera footage may also provide useful information. When a person exits a vehicle before being struck, investigators may examine the vehicle’s movement and the events immediately before the person entered the roadway. Medical findings can help document the effects of the collision.
