What Investigators Often Examine After a Bicycle Crash on a Highway
When a bicyclist is struck on a highway or rural roadway, investigators usually review lane positioning, visibility, and roadway markings to determine how the collision occurred. Traveling left of center can create dangerous conditions, especially at night.
Lighting conditions and driver reaction time are also commonly examined in late-night crashes. Investigators may use vehicle damage, bicycle placement, and tire marks to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Road shoulders and lane width may also become part of the review process. In many bicycle fatalities, medical findings and scene evidence help explain the severity of the impact and the movements of both the bicycle and vehicle before the collision.
