Tucson, AZ (May 8, 2026) – A 51-year-old man died after he was struck by a pickup truck on Thursday night near the intersection of Sabino Canyon Road and Snyder Road in Tucson. The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. on May 7.
Investigators said Mikhail Stepanov was standing in a crosswalk waiting to cross the roadway when a 2023 Ford F-150 turned through the intersection on a green light and hit him. Emergency units responded to the scene and transported Stepanov to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died from those injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene following the collision. Early findings indicate that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be a factor in the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Stepanov.
What Conditions Are Often Reviewed After a Pedestrian Crash at an Intersection?
After a pedestrian crash at an intersection, investigators often examine traffic signal timing, crosswalk placement, and driver visibility. These factors can help provide a clearer picture of how the collision occurred, especially at busy intersections with multiple turning lanes or nighttime traffic.
Lighting conditions are also commonly reviewed because reduced visibility can affect both drivers and pedestrians after dark. Investigators may look at roadway markings, nearby signs, and whether pedestrians were inside marked crossing areas at the time of impact. Vehicle speed, traffic flow, and driver reaction time can also become part of the review process. In many cases, surveillance footage or witness statements help establish how vehicles and pedestrians were moving in the moments leading up to the crash.
