Long Beach, CA (July 4, 2026) – Emergency crews responded early Saturday morning to a two-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 405 just north of the Pacific Avenue off-ramp in Long Beach.
According to the California Highway Patrol incident log, the crash was reported at approximately 12:51 a.m. and initially blocked the HOV lane as well as the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes. Initial reports indicated the collision involved two vehicles.
Responding officers later confirmed the crash involved a black SUV and a Tesla Model Y. The Tesla came to rest facing the wrong direction, and the damaged vehicles blocked the two left lanes of the freeway. The Long Beach Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, and two tow trucks were requested to remove the vehicles.
Authorities also received reports that several motorists had stopped to assist, creating additional hazards as approaching traffic continued at freeway speeds. At one point, individuals involved in the crash were reportedly outside their vehicles and engaged in a verbal altercation.
Officials have not released information regarding injuries or identified those involved. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
We hope anyone injured in the crash makes a full and speedy recovery.
Why Remaining Near Disabled Vehicles on Freeways Is Dangerous
After a freeway collision, one of the greatest risks is a secondary crash. Vehicles stopped in active travel lanes can be difficult for approaching motorists to see or avoid, particularly at night or in heavy traffic.
Emergency responders encourage drivers involved in crashes to move to a safe location whenever possible and avoid standing in traffic lanes. Investigators typically review vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, and traffic conditions to determine how the collision occurred while also assessing any factors that may have increased the risk to those at the scene.
