Why Crossing the Center Line Often Leads to Head-on Collisions
Head-on crashes frequently occur when a vehicle crosses the centerline into oncoming traffic. On two-lane roads, there is often only a painted line separating vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
When a car enters the opposing lane, drivers approaching from the other direction may have little time to react. The combined speed of both vehicles can lead to severe damage and serious injuries.
Safety features such as seat belts help reduce the risk of fatal injuries during these impacts. When restraints are not used, occupants may be more vulnerable to the strong forces created in a head-on collision.
Investigators often review vehicle positions, road markings, and driver actions to determine how and why a vehicle crossed into the opposing lane.
