Why Motorcycle Crashes at Intersections Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Motorcycles offer far less physical protection than passenger vehicles. Because riders are exposed, they are more vulnerable during collisions with larger vehicles.
Intersections are common locations for motorcycle accidents because vehicles approach from different directions. Drivers turning, stopping, or crossing traffic must watch for motorcycles that may be harder to see than larger vehicles.
Visibility can also be affected by buildings, parked vehicles, or traffic signals near the intersection. When drivers do not see a motorcycle in time, the risk of a serious crash increases.
Differences in size and weight between motorcycles and passenger vehicles can also contribute to more severe injuries in collisions, especially when impacts occur at higher speeds.
