Wilkes County, NC (April 7, 2026) – A deadly crash involving a pedestrian was reported in Wilkes County.
The incident happened around 9:11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, along S Windy Gap Rd near Jarvis Store Rd. Authorities say a 2016 Ford pickup was heading east when it struck a man crossing the road as the driver came around a curve.
The pedestrian, identified as 74-year-old Douglas Edward Williams of North Wilkesboro, was taken to Wilkes Medical Center. He later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The driver of the pickup, 68-year-old David Eugene Mesimer of Union Grove, was not hurt in the crash. Early findings did not point to speed or impairment as factors in the incident.
The road was shut down for about an hour as emergency units worked at the scene and cleared the area. No charges are expected following a review with the district attorney’s office.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Factors Can Affect Visibility on Curved Rural Roads?
Curved rural roads can present challenges for both drivers and pedestrians, especially when sight distance is limited. When a vehicle approaches a bend, objects ahead may not be visible until the last moment. This can reduce reaction time, even at normal speeds.
Lighting conditions can also affect visibility. Early morning hours may bring glare or shadows that make it harder to see someone in the roadway. In areas without sidewalks or marked crossings, people may walk along or across roads where drivers do not expect them.
Road design and surroundings also matter. Trees, hills, or uneven terrain can block a driver’s view as they move through a curve. These combined factors can increase the risk of a crash, particularly on less-traveled rural routes.
