Why Secondary Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous on Roadways
Secondary crashes can happen when people exit their vehicles after an initial accident. Passing drivers may not expect pedestrians on the roadway, especially in areas without warning signs or blocked lanes.
Even when the first crash does not cause injuries, the situation can still be hazardous. Vehicles traveling at normal speeds may have limited time to react to someone standing or walking near the road.
Staying visible and moving to a safe location away from traffic can help reduce the risk. Using hazard lights and remaining alert to oncoming vehicles may also help lower the chances of a secondary incident.
