California, MD (April 2, 2026) – One person was hurt in a serious two-vehicle crash that led to a vehicle fire on Wednesday evening, April 1, in California, Maryland.
The collision occurred around 5:15 p.m. along Three Notch Road near Miramar Way, close to a Checkers restaurant. When emergency units arrived, they found one of the vehicles engulfed in flames, and bystanders, along with off-duty firefighters, had already pulled the occupant from the burning vehicle.
A medical helicopter was initially requested but could not respond due to weather conditions. The injured person was instead taken by ambulance to a trauma center for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.
The second vehicle involved came to rest further down Three Notch Road near a motel. One person from that vehicle was evaluated at the scene but declined transport and reported no injuries. A crosswalk sign was also struck during the crash, and part of the southbound lanes was closed while crews worked to clear the area.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
How Vehicle Fires Can Develop After a Crash
Vehicle fires can occur after a collision when fuel systems or electrical components are damaged. Even a moderate crash can cause fuel leaks or sparks, increasing the risk of flames developing quickly.
In some cases, fires begin within moments of impact, while in others they may take longer to ignite. The presence of flammable materials and heat from the engine can contribute to how fast a fire spreads. This is why rapid response and quick action by nearby individuals can make a difference.
Safety features like fuel shutoff systems and fire-resistant materials are designed to reduce fire risks, but they do not eliminate them completely. Keeping a safe distance from a burning vehicle is often recommended due to the potential for sudden flare-ups or smoke exposure.
