What Makes Wrong-Way Crashes Especially Dangerous?
Wrong-way crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries because they typically involve head-on collisions at high speeds, where the force of impact is significantly greater than in other types of crashes.
These incidents most commonly occur on divided highways and interstates when drivers enter exit ramps by mistake, ignore signage, or become disoriented due to impairment, fatigue, or poor visibility.
Even a brief period of driving in the wrong direction can create extremely dangerous conditions for oncoming traffic, leaving little time for drivers to react or avoid a collision. As a result, wrong-way crashes are considered among the most hazardous roadway incidents and often require extensive emergency response and investigation.
