Why Are Lane-Crossing Crashes on Highways So Dangerous?
Crashes involving vehicles crossing into oncoming traffic are among the most severe types of roadway incidents. Highways like Highway 97 often involve vehicles traveling at high speeds in opposite directions, leaving little time to react when a vehicle enters the wrong lane.
When a vehicle crosses the center line, it can lead to head-on or multiple sequential collisions, as seen in this incident. These types of crashes frequently result in serious injuries or fatalities due to the combined force of vehicles moving toward each other.
Factors such as driver inattention, fatigue, impairment, or medical emergencies can contribute to lane departures. Preventative measures like staying alert, maintaining proper lane positioning, and using roadway safety features such as rumble strips can help reduce the likelihood of these devastating collisions.
