Dunn, NC (March 28, 2026) – Three children were injured on Friday night, March 27, in a two-vehicle crash on Hodges Chapel Road in Harnett County. The crash occurred just after 11:10 p.m. on the bridge over Interstate 95 at mile marker 77, about two miles north of Dunn.

Troopers reported that a van was stopped at a stop sign, attempting to turn left onto Interstate 95 south, when a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction struck the rear of the van. The impact caused the van to spin, and the rear hatch flew open. Two children who were sleeping in the back were ejected, while a third child, who was restrained, became trapped inside the vehicle.

The two ejected children were listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon, and the third child was in serious condition. Emergency units responded to the scene to transport the children to nearby hospitals.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Our thoughts are with the children and their families as they recover.

Why Crashes Involving Children Can Be Especially Dangerous

Children are particularly vulnerable in vehicle crashes, especially if they are unrestrained or improperly secured. Even minor collisions can result in severe injuries for young passengers.

Proper use of car seats, booster seats, and seatbelts greatly reduces the risk of ejection and serious harm. High-impact collisions, sudden stops, and side impacts can create dangerous situations, highlighting the importance of child safety restraints and careful driving in areas with intersections or highway access.
