Midway, GA (March 13, 2026) – Authorities have identified the pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle early on Thursday morning, March 12, along Interstate 95 southbound near Exit 76 in Midway.

Officials said the victim was 72-year-old Ceymour Thompson of Orange County, Florida. According to preliminary information, Thompson had left his vehicle on the left shoulder of the interstate around 5 a.m. before walking south along the roadway.

Investigators reported that Thompson later entered the travel lanes near the exit when he was struck by a vehicle. Emergency units responded to the scene, and the crash temporarily blocked two right lanes of Interstate 95 during the morning commute.

The vehicle involved was a 2020 Volvo XC90 driven by a 58-year-old Florida man who was traveling with his wife from Ohio to Florida. Authorities said the driver remained at the scene following the crash.

Officials also confirmed that Thompson had been reported missing by his spouse to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office the day before the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Why Pedestrian Incidents on Interstates Are Especially Dangerous

Interstates such as Interstate 95 are designed primarily for fast-moving highway traffic rather than pedestrian activity. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds may have limited time to react when a person is present on the roadway.

Drivers on major highways often focus on maintaining speed and following traffic flow. When a pedestrian suddenly appears in the travel lanes, it can be difficult for drivers to slow down or change lanes quickly enough to avoid a collision.

High-speed roadways also offer few safe areas for people on foot. Limited shoulders, multiple lanes, and constant traffic movement can create extremely hazardous conditions when someone enters or walks along the interstate.
