Why Early-Morning Highway Crashes Can Be Severe
Crashes that occur in the early morning hours often involve reduced visibility due to low-light conditions. Even on rural highways, changes in lighting can affect how quickly drivers detect other vehicles or react to roadway conditions.
Traffic volumes are typically lighter at that time, which can sometimes lead to higher travel speeds and reduced reaction margins. When two vehicles collide at highway speeds, the resulting impact forces are often significant.
Investigators commonly review roadway lighting, vehicle positions, weather conditions, and travel directions to reconstruct how early-morning crashes occur. These factors help establish the sequence of events and identify any contributing circumstances.
