Why Visibility Is a Major Factor in Early Morning Pedestrian Fatalities
Pedestrian crashes that occur before sunrise can be especially dangerous because drivers may have limited visibility. Darkness, reduced contrast, and unexpected movement near travel lanes can make it more difficult to recognize a person on or near the roadway.
Rural and semi-rural roads often present additional challenges. Many lack street lighting, sidewalks, or marked crosswalks, which can increase the risk for both drivers and pedestrians. Investigators commonly examine lighting conditions, roadway design, vehicle speed, and sight distance when reviewing these types of cases.
Safety experts recommend that pedestrians wear reflective clothing or use reflective lighting when walking in low-light conditions. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert, particularly during the early morning hours, and to use extra caution when passing other vehicles or traveling through areas with reduced visibility.
